I encountered this same difficulty early on.
#QUARTUS USB BLASTER DRIVER WINDOWS 10 DRIVERS#
The difficulty with driver installation that Kai mentioned is because the Quartus drivers don't have signature verification. If not, I'm going to put everything back together "as is." The camera still checks out fine using QTCap. I've ordered two replacement USB Blasters arriving Sunday to see whether one of them might work.

Every time I try to connect with the Altera FPGA chip on the USB3 board using the Blaster, the Quartus programming software throws the error "Can't access JTAG chain." Maybe the blaster is defective. The software sees the USB0 hardware, and that's all. I've done everything under the sun for the past two days to get it to work, but with no luck. The Quartus programmer refuses to recognize the JTAG chain. Finally taped a cover (piece of tissue) over the open body to keep the screw out the third time.Ĭongratulations to Kai and all for accomplishing the upgrade! It is remarkably easy to drop the grounding screw and washer down into the innards of the camera when reassembling.Note the orientation of the connector from Christian's and SwRI's pictures: there is no key/alignment to prevent inserting it in the other (presumably wrong) orientation, and I do not know the consequences of doing so.

I got away without filing, but was careful to stabilize the connector with a rubber band (also seen in Christian's picture) to prevent shifting and housing pin contact (and because there is no connector-plug friction holding it in place anyway). The connector partially rests on the metal housing, with metal pins very close to touching the housing, so Christian's idea of filing down the protruding pin ends of the USB Blaster connector is useful.

With 18.1, the Altera driver install popup had 4 drivers, 2 of which installed (including the `Altera Altera USB-Blaster.' one), and 2 failed. I finally went back to the Intel site and tried version 18.1 (the version mentioned in SwRI's guide). No reason was given nor found for the failure.

Upgrading drivers via Windows Device Manager also failed. I then tried installing the driver manually as the popup had suggested (qprogrammer\drivers\DPInst.exe), but it still failed. Programmer then failed to find the USB Blaster (not entirely unexpected given the driver install failure), despite it being visible in Windows Device Manager. When installing Quartus Prime Programmer Lite version 20.1.1.720 (the latest version, offered by default), the Altera USB Blaster driver failed to install, with a red X next to `Altera (WinUSB) JTAG c.' in a popup (the sole driver listed). As others have noticed, it doesn't require detailed electronics knowledge, but prior experience successfully dis- and re-assembling devices with small connectors, ribbon cables etc.
#QUARTUS USB BLASTER DRIVER WINDOWS 10 UPGRADE#
Back on the Win7 computer I tried using the command prompt to open altera\11.2sp2\quartus\bin\jtagconfig.exe and saw it read out the message "No JTAG hardware available".Finally attempted the QHY174 firmware upgrade (successfully) and thought I'd share my experience. In troubleshooting, I also tried installing the same version of Quartus II and the USB blaster on my Win10 laptop, but the driver isn't signed for win10 so I dropped that approach. After connecting the USB Blaster to my Win7 computer for the first time and installing the driver from altera\11.1sp2\quartus\drivers, the USB Blaster shows up in the control panel as "USB-Blaster(Altera)" but Quartus II doesn't show it in the Programmer's Hardware Setup page. Because I have this Ep2c5/ep2c8 dev board, I've been following this video to begin my work with FPGAs:
